'Women in Blue' Reviews: "Women in Blue takes its audience on a gripping ride that will leave them unsettled until the very end"

On July 31, 2024, Apple TV+ premiered 'Women in Blue', which has earned rave reviews from critics, holding fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. In the series, which is set in 1971, four women form Mexico's first female police force, which they discover to be a mere publicity stunt created to counteract headlines about a serial killer. They vow to apprehend the killer themselves in order to not only make a point but keep Mexico safe. The ensemble cast includes Bárbara Mori, Ximena Sariñana, Natalia Téllez, and Amorita Rasgado. Read the full review round-up below.

Aramide Tinubu of Variety says, "Deeply detailed, Women in Blue takes its audience on a gripping ride that will leave them unsettled until the very end." Adding, "While all the characters are compelling, María and Ángeles have the most fascinating arcs. Torn between her desire to follow her dreams and continuing with her traditional housewife role, María struggles with mom guilt as she reconsiders the life she’d always thought she wanted. In contrast, Ángeles, who is who is depicted as processing information differently than others, learns to speak up for herself and her opinions in a society that has worked overtime to dismiss her ideas and particular way of thinking."

Anita Singh of Daily Telegraph writes, "The first episode has a whiff of Police Academy about it as the cadets go through training, but after that it gets into its stride as a thriller, with the women’s stories adding warmth to the murder mystery."

Amelia Harvey of Nerdspin praises the series, stating, "Based on real events, Women in Blue does dip into the melodrama, relying on soapy twists in the second portion of the season. Luckily the core four characters and the performers will keep audiences engaged."

Rachel Aroesti of Guardian notes, "Although Women in Blue carefully walks this tightrope of moods, it is still jarring at times. Yet it is precisely this awkward mishmash that helps Women in Blue feel vital and ring true." Continuing, "Then there’s the chilling serial killer storyline, which turns out to be crucial to the show’s success. The transformation of our protagonists and the machinations of the city’s corrupt and disingenuous police department are entertaining and thought-provoking seams, but there’s not much inherent dramatic tension or direction in either. Instead, it is the murderer’s mysterious identity – and the manner in which he will eventually be unmasked – that forms the narrative drive. The two elements cleave satisfyingly when María, having witnessed the dodgy methods of her superiors, undertakes her own secret independent investigation into the murders."
