The Holiday Offerings of the Week Keep Spirits Bright

The holiday offerings brought to viewers this week may be less plentiful, but oddly enough might be the most interesting thus far. Here are the three that are especially noteworthy.

On December 21, 2024, Lifetime released 'A Carpenter Christmas Romance', which is the spiciest film of the season. Mandi Bierly of TVLine says, "From Sarah Drew, writer of last year’s A Cowboy Christmas Romance, comes Lifetime’s sexiest holiday movie of 2024 (with an equally shameless title). Pretty Little Liars’ Sasha Pieterse stars as fantasy romance novelist Andrea, who takes refuge at her late grandpa’s farmhouse when readers threaten to boycott the last book in her best-selling series after its final page killing off a fan favorite leaks. She may still have one admirer, however: Seth (Mitchell Slaggert, The Sex Lives of College Girls), who’s described as Andrea’s “very own Jordan Catalano.” Growing up, she’d spend her summers on the farm and tutor/make out with the popular athlete — who made her feel like his “nerdy little kept secret” in public (Normal People vibes). This “Jordan” looks more like a Hemsworth brother than Jared Leto, but artisanal woodworker/handyman Seth embodies the growth we never got to witness on My So-Called Life. We find out why he treated Andrea poorly when they were young, how his post-high school life unfolded, and what happened to make him the stand-up guy who’s literally rebuilding his town after a fire decimated it. Because this is Lifetime, that noble transformation is accompanied by a surprise-appearance shirtless scene, slo-mo wood carrying, a hand-on-hand sanding tutorial, a rain-soaked sex scene, and a blow-up before Seth renews Andrea’s faith in happy endings. Fingers crossed we get A Man in Uniform Christmas Romance next year."

Also on December 21, 2024, Hallmark released 'Happy Howlidays', which also anxiously anticipated. Bierly writes, "Ezra Moreland, the winner of Hallmark+’s Finding Mr. Christmas, stars as dog rescue owner Max. When his heartbroken pup Jules falls head over paws for Russell, a stray reluctantly fostered by Seattle Tourism Board coordinator Mia (Jessica Lowndes), the canine couple become a city favorite — and the foursome is forced to go on more holiday outings together for content. There’s a depth to hot mess Mia’s story that you won’t be expecting, and a cameo from a Hallmark fave that you won’t find too surprising. Moreland has yet to master the necessary charm to remain a Hallmark Leading Man, but a shirtless scene shows promise for him to at least become a go-to Ex."

On December 22, 2024, Lifetime releases 'Engaged by Christmas', which on paper seems to be a fan favorite solely based on the themes being popular amongst fans. Bierly notes, "Professional proposal planner Zoe (Brittany Bristow) is about to launch her own broader romance-based business with a “12 Dates of Christmas” blog when taking the suggestion of her most trusted advice columnist, Aunt Adora, to have an honest conversation with her boyfriend about their future results in her being suddenly single. Once desperate Zoe discovers Aunt Adora is actually nephew Adam (Marcus Rosner), she blackmails him into being her de facto plus-one and publicizing her services. Bristow and Rosner, holiday movie pros, make this predictable plot go down as smoothly as the beverages served at Zoe’s hot cocoa pop-up."

'Trading Up Christmas' Brings Christmas Joy

On December 19, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Trading Up Christmas', which has earned predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, "Michelle tries to get her sister a new place to live and all she has is a Christmas stocking to trade with." The ensemble cast includes Italia Ricci, Michael Xavier, Taylor Love, and Connie Manfredi. But what did the critics say?

Liz Kocan of Decider says, "Using a trading up scheme as the basis for a movie is a clever conceit, and Trading Up Christmas turns what is typically a fun, creative challenge into a heartwarming tale of kindness and community – but in doing so, it doesn’t get overly sappy. By having cynical Dan and Keri both expressing their doubts and realistic expectations for how the whole thing will play out, they both keep idealistic and optimistic Michelle grounded and, yes, of course they all serve as foils for one another. Michelle helps Dan’s heart grow three sizes and eventually he opens up about his feelings for her. But Michelle, always the proactive helper, finally lets someone else help her for a change, and in him, she finds a mischievous accomplice. Unlike many Hallmark movies which take place in a fictional town that’s named some variant of [Tree Species]+[Geographical Feature], like Sycamore Hills or Cedar Grove, this one takes place in the real city of Worcester, Massachusetts – the very city where this writer happened to grow up. If I had to make a very personal complaint, it’s that there is nary a B-roll shot of the giant Polar Seltzer polar bear off of I-290, nor a single reference to the traffic in Kelly Square. Putting that aside so I can be an real journalist like Dan is, the film has a satisfying romance that builds gradually and realistically as Michelle and Dan start their relationship as writer and subject, soon developing into flirty friends, and many of the supporting cast are genuinely funny and well-developed. The movie features several intertwining plots about sibling relationships, too, which help it feel like these characters are layered and would still be interesting outside of the trading plot. While it’s no surprise that this movie gets its happy ending, both in romance and real estate, it takes us on a slightly unpredictable ride to get there, which is always a plus considering how formulaic these films can often be." Adding, "Michael Xavier’s portrayal of Dan is prickly at first, but pretty soon, after he starts to throw himself into his role as Michelle’s trading buddy, his talent as a comedic actor starts to shine. The goofier he’s expected to be, the more believable and appealing a leading man he is."

Networks Offer a Stocking Full of Holiday Joy: Part 2

This week, the various networks producing holiday fare offered more notable content than normal, so narrowing the choices down to just five was a bit more difficult this time around. Saying that, here are the four that critics have singled out as being the most intriguing and caught my eye.

On December 14, 2024, Lifetime released 'The Holiday Junkie', which has earned rave reviews. Mandi Bierly of TVLine says, "Jennifer Love Hewitt has never headlined a holiday movie before, but she made up for lost time by developing, directing and starring in this obvious labor of love (she even performs two songs on the soundtrack). She plays professional Christmas decorator and planner Andie, who’s carrying on her late mother’s legacy with the titular company but also dreams of expanding it into a consumer brand. She hopes to impress her newest client, a venture capitalist, by giving his family a picture-perfect holiday. But when the brood gets stuck out of town, Andie finds herself home alone for days with Scrooge house manager Mason (Brian Hallisay, Hewitt’s husband and former The Client List co-star). He has a valid reason for being an ice man in December, but eventually, he thaws. Things heat up. Then way up. Then cool off. Then…well, you’ll have to watch. There are a lot of films with characters adjusting to Christmas without a parent, but few explore the grief as fully as this one. You’ve never seen a character tear up as many times as Andie does throughout the film — a realistic number, if you’ve been through it yourself. Yet as palpable as the pain is at times (listen for Hewitt’s cover of “Missing You”), so, too, is the tenderness Mason and Andie show each other in certain moments (wait for the Christmas lights). Here’s hoping Hewitt pours her heart into another movie next year."

Also on that night, Hallmark Channel released 'The Santa Class', which was my personal favorite of the grouping. Bierly notes, "If you like your holiday movies with some Christmas magic — but still shy of the story taking place inside a snow globe — our runner-up pick, The Santa Class (premieres Saturday, Dec. 14 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel), is for you. Kate North (the always wonderful Kimberley Sustad) is dealing with a lot this season: Her father has handed over the reins of his once-great academy that trains seasonal Santas. To save it, she needs the latest ragtag group of recruits to defeat a rival Santa school in the annual Christmas Cup for the first time ever, with the help of side-switching instructor Dan (Benjamin Ayres, tempering a Buddy the Elf-level enthusiasm). And among those recruits are the real Santa (Holiday Road’s Trevor Lerner), who Kate and Ben discover in the road with amnesia, and Hallmark fave Paul Campbell, who plays himself. Campbell’s hilarious turn, and the sentimental ending, will make this a film you’ll be happy to randomly catch during Countdown to Christmas for years to come." Personally, it is also my favorite tv movie of the year but knowing how the Emmy Awards work...it sadly will not get noticed.

Much to my surprise, 'All I Need for Christmas', which premiered on Hallmark Mystery on December 12, 2024 to little fanfare or commercials, proved the be the most emotional of the group. Bierly also was impressed, stating, "Flip phone-toting singer/songwriter Maggie (Mallory Jansen) fears today’s music-making apps have killed her career for good. Which means she’s not thrilled to meet Archer (Dan Jeannotte), the developer of her presumed downfall, at her family’s New York state Christmas tree farm. With time, Archer inspires her to see a way forward, and she encourages him to repair his relationship with his sister Piper (Emily Tennant) using his years of therapy spent processing their father’s shockingly toxic holiday tradition. Jansen and Jeannotte play the tension and romance with ease, and aren’t even upstaged by adorable piglets named Johnny and June."

Last, but certainly not least, OWN released 'Mistletoe & Matrimony', which was the most unexpectedly fun. Bierly writes, "Chicago wedding planner Olivia (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) gets a last-minute client for Christmas Eve — her nearly unredeemable bridezilla sister Rosemary (Asha James) — whose fiancée Gwen’s (Krista Nazaire) best friend happens to be Olivia’s ex, travel photographer Isaiah (Etienne Maurice). While Olivia and Isaiah team up to fulfill Rosemary’s demands, their feelings and dreams of launching a destination wedding business together resurface. So do all their past issues." While I was completely unaware that OWN made movies in the first place, this film is absolutely going on my annual rewatch list due to the chemistry between the cast as well as a top notch script.

'Hanukkah on the Rocks' Reviews: "Ultimately, the ensemble nature of this movie as well as the focus on celebrating Jewish culture and traditions help to make it feel worth watching for viewers of all backgrounds."

On December 13, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Hanukkah on the Rocks', which has earned a predominantly positive reception from critics. The film pairs "Degrassi‘s Stacey Farber and The Secret Life of The American Teenager‘s Daren Kagasoff as two adults feeling lost in life just a week before Hanukkah. Luckily, they both end up finding some solace and purpose in a Chicago bar called Rocky’s, as well as its staff, patrons, and Hanukkah celebrations. But even as the holiday brings the two closer, they‘re unsure of the road ahead as the futures they’d planned clash with the new ones they inspire each other to chase." But what did the critics say?

Credit: ©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Steven Ackerman
Maddy Casale of Decider says, "Hanukkah on the Rocks might remind you of the 2022 Hallmark Hanukkah movie, Hanukkah on Rye, and not just because of their similar titles. Julie Sherman Wolfe actually wrote both films, which each showcase Jewish holiday foods and traditions in their own way. The warm neighborhood pub vibe may also remind you of the beloved sitcom Cheers, especially considering both titles feature a bar owner named Sam." Adding, "Although it has been trying to diversify its filmography slowly but surely over the past few years, Hallmark still doesn’t have many Hanukkah movies. With that in mind, I think that the mere existence of this movie is a win for representation, and the writing also shows that care, research, and personal experience went into the portrayal of this Hanukkah story. Especially coming to this movie as someone who was raised Christian, there are plenty of things that may have felt unfamiliar, but that didn’t mean that as a viewer, I cared about them any less. After all, at the heart of Hanukkah on the Rocks is a story about community, tradition, and family, things that anyone can relate to. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy watching the festivities because both the characters at Rocky’s and the movie itself welcome everyone in with open arms. That being said, there are some critiques and gripes that I think viewers of any religion or creed could likely agree upon. First of all, it’s a bit ridiculous to suggest that there would be only one box of a specific Hanukkah candle in a city as big and diverse as Chicago, but hey, that’s just Hallmark movies for you, so we can give it a pass. However, a major part of any Hallmark movie tends to be the romance, and the one here between Tory and Jay was just okay. They had some genuinely enjoyable moments of interaction and chemistry, but these were weighed down by some especially cheesy moments and the somewhat two-dimensional nature of the characters, themselves. You’re telling me that Tory has lived in Chicago her entire life and has zero friends besides her Bubby? I know she’s a workaholic but that seems impossible! But I guess if she didn’t have time for her sister and nephew, she really didn’t have time for any friends, which is a bummer. Really, I just wish the characters were a little more fleshed out so they could feel a bit more real and therefore easier to invest in and connect to. Ultimately, the ensemble nature of this movie as well as the focus on celebrating Jewish culture and traditions help to make it feel worth watching for viewers of all backgrounds. I’m glad to see Hallmark go for something outside of their usual Christmas story, and I hope that they will continue to do so in the years ahead!"

'Leah's Perfect Gift' Misses the Mark

On December 8, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Leah's Perfect Gift', which has proven to be one of the least successful holiday films of the season. In the film, "A Jewish Leah accompanies her boyfriend to Connecticut to experience a traditional Christmas with his family." The ensemble cast includes Emily Arlook, Evan Roderick, and Barbara Niven. But what did the critics say?

Credit: @2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Allister Foster
Danielle Solzman of Solzy at the Movies writes, "Leah’s Perfect Gift is a Hallmark movie about a Jewish woman obsessed with Xmas and longing to celebrate a traditional Xmas. Movies and Chinese food aren’t enough? I mean, this year we have Chanukah starting on December 25 because that’s when 25 Kislev starts this year. Talk to any religious or observant Jew and they’ll tell you that the premise of Leah’s Perfect Gift is offensive and sickening. Is this what the Hallmark Channel thinks of the Jewish community? That we’d rather celebrate a Christian holiday than our own?!? It is bad enough that I only learned on motzi Shabbos that the film is based on a book! Hallmark, we need to have a talk. Some of you are probably going to say, well, what about interfaith families? No offense to those couples and their families but we’re talking about a film where a Jewish woman is more obsessed with Xmas than the Christians in the film. I don’t think I need to remind anyone about the origins of Xmas and why it’s so offensive that a Jewish woman wants to celebrate Xmas more than the Jewish holidays. If you’re wondering, the same would apply if it were about a Jewish man, rather than woman. The mere idea is just so offensive. It’s as if Hallmark thought, the Jews are already feeling bad enough this year, how can we make it worse?!? That being said, Hanukkah on the Rocks (why not Chanukah, like the Hebrew pronunciation) is premiering on Shabbos. I’ll be watching it really soon. Let’s hope it’s better." Adding, "The amount of Chanukah featured in this movie is very slim, maybe five minutes at the most. Jonathan (Barry Levy) and Suzanne Goldberg (Robyn Ross) host Chanukah at their home. In what is no doubt a stereotype, Suzanne insists that their guests do not leave without food. Chinese food and the movies? We might be getting some Chinese food–if anything, it’s maybe the same amount as all of Chanukah in the movie–but not any movies. Oh yeah, the Jewish family is from New York City–the city with the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. You start wondering how it is possible that Leah became more obsessed with Xmas than Jewish holidays. Here’s the part that I don’t get, especially because you’d think people would at least read about Chanukah in the newspaper. Barbara Westwood knows absolutely nothing about Chanukah and seems shocked about Jews eating Chinese food on December 25. I’m sorry but WHAT?!? You’d have to be living in a cave if you’ve never heard of Chanukah, let alone Jewish minhag of eating Chinese food and going to the movies on December 24-25. Chinese restaurants are among the few restaurants that are open so it developed into a Jewish minhag to eat Chinese food. This year though, the first night of Chanukah coincides with December 25 so there will be plenty of Chanukah parties with a mix of latkes and Chinese food. One such party is currently on my calendar."

'Private Princess Christmas' Reviews: "some sweet moments, but a subpar romantic plot"

On December 6, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Private Princess Christmas', which has recieved a mixed reception from critics. In the film, "After failing in her royal duties, Princess Violet is sent to an American leadership training program where she makes and unexpected connection with the stoic instructor, Captain Ryan." The ensemble cast includes Ali Skovbye, Derek Klena, Erica Durance, and Kheon Clarke. But what did the critics say?

Maddy Casale of Decider says, Private Princess Christmas is the “parent figure sending daughter to a boot camp where she finds purpose and an unlikely bond with her Captain” aspect of Cadet Kelly with dashes of The Sound of Music and Falling for Christmas also mixed in." Continuing, "Also, apologies for being nitpicky, and I know Wingravia is fictional but they did say it was in Eastern Europe, so what’s up with the British accents? Wouldn’t something vaguely European and Slavic be more fitting? Then again, this movie isn’t too concerned with realism, so I guess we’ll have to give them a pass. I mean seriously, how did they cause a fire in an oven because Violet confused Fahrenheit and Celsius? I know it’s annoying to be the “um, actually!” person but I’ll do it anyway and say that if Violet was setting Celsius numbers on an American oven, she’d be baking things at less than 200 degrees Fahrenheit, so how would that end up burning anything? But hey, I guess where there’s a will, there’s a way. This isn’t to say that it was all bad! Ali Skovbye was at her best as Violet when sharing the screen with Shep, using her knowledge of ASL to communicate with the deaf veteran in moments that transcended a script or schmaltzy Christmas story to feel like genuine, touching scenes of human connection. Perhaps if the romantic plot was axed, the story would have had time to give Violet more of these moments, and maybe there’d even be time to make the other cadets more well-rounded. Unfortunately, a Hallmark holiday movie without a romance is like a queen without a crown or a princess without a mission (that is to say, apparently unthinkable) so the finished product does not fully reach its potential. SKIP IT. Private Princess Christmas has some sweet moments, but a subpar romantic plot, two-dimensional characters, and some extra cheesy moments end up dragging it down. However, if you want a good drinking game, then actually you maybe should stream it, just so you can get blitzed by taking a sip every time they say “festoon."

'A Dance in the Snow' Reviews: "a sweet, family friendly film that may not be one you’ll watch on repeat, but it definitely scratches the itch if you’re looking for warm holiday comfort"

On December 5, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'A Dance in the Snow', which just might be the most heartwarming film of the holiday season this year. In the film, "Melanie wants to create an inclusive Christmas dance for her daughter Jenny, not realizing Jenny is planning a dance of her own to honor Melanie." The ensemble cast includes Erica Cerra, Dorian Giordano, Vanessa Burghardt, and Mark Ghanimé. But what did the critics say?

Liz Kocan of Decider says, "A Dance In The Snow is a sweet celebration of inclusiveness and the normalization of things that, to the outside world, may not seem so normal. Melanie’s biggest struggle as Jenny’s mother is getting the outside world to understand her daughter, and so she takes matters into her own hands to raise awareness of Jenny’s struggles to the people in their community by planning a sensory-friendly dance. Jenny, on the other hand, may have her triggers, but she’s emotionally intuitive and has no difficulty realizing all that her mom does for her, which is why she wants to put on an event for her mother’s benefit. While the film does include romantic subplots for both of their characters, the real love story here is between a mom and her daughter, and their evolution as women who see one another for who they are outside the context of their mother and child relationship. Even though the film uses Jenny’s autism and Melanie’s work at a center for neurodivergent kids as a major plot point, it manages not to veer into after-school special territory thanks to the solid acting and the genuine chemistry, especially between the adult romantic leads, Cerra and Ghanimé. The film has a very specific energy that leans more family-friendly than romantic, but it’s also a powerful love letter to parenthood, and the fact that loving parents’ behavior is often mirrored by their observant children." Adding, "A Dance In The Snow is a sweet, family friendly film that may not be one you’ll watch on repeat, but it definitely scratches the itch if you’re looking for warm holiday comfort. STREAM IT!"

Hallmark Scores a Touchdown and a Foul

On November 30, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story', which has earned a mixed reception from critics. In the film, "Chiefs superfan Alana tries to win the Fan of the Year Award as a Christmas gift for her family, falling in love with someone in the Chiefs front office along the way." The ensemble cast includes Tyler Hynes, Hunter King, Mary Beth McDonough, Ed Begley Jr., Christine Ebersole, and Richard Riehle. Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times says, "You might have heard about dueling Christmas TV movies inspired by the real-life romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, but while Lifetime’s “Christmas in the Spotlight” is indeed an artificial-tree homage to the Swift/Kelce story, the Hallmark movie “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” is NOT a football player/pop star love story, even though the latter film is set squarely in Chiefs Nation and even features a cameo by Mama Donna Kelce." Adding, "The wonderful Ed Begley is a warm presence as Alana’s grandfather, who was given a Chiefs hat by a local Santa Claus back in 1969 — a hat the family believes has magical powers come playoff time. A handful of former and current Chiefs make brief cameos. When Andy Reid makes a late appearance, the scene is filmed in a way that has us wondering if he was even with the actors that day, or just recited a couple of lines separately. If you’re a Chiefs fan, you’ll probably get a kick of out the whole thing. Not sure how well it’s going to play in Raider Nation."

Credit: ©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Courtesy Vortex Media
On the bright side, November 29, 2024 saw the release of 'A '90s Christmas', which received rave reviews from critics. In the film, "A workaholic lawyer destined to spend Christmas alone is transported back to 1999 after an unexpected run in with a particularly wise ride-share driver." The ensemble cast includes Chandler Massey and Eva Bourne. Liz Kocan of Decider writes, "There are loads of 1999-specific gags when we go back in time (weirdly generic posters on the wall for a film called She’s All There and bands that look like the Backstreet Boys and Hanson but aren’t), although there’s one based-in-reality joke, as Lucy picks up a notebook where she has scrawled out a love note for Joshua Jackson and sighs, “Oh, Lucy.” I mean, some things actually don’t change, the man is a fine wine. But when the magical Uber driver reappears, she explains to Lucy that this is real, and Lucy gets a chance for a do-over now that she’s back in the time and place where she actually had people around her who she felt close to and didn’t push away. The only person that Lucy can tell about the fact that she’s from the future is her old bestie, Nadine (Jenny Raven), who she’s grown apart from in the 2024 timeline. Nadine is a sci-fi geek so of course she immediately buys in to the fact that Lucy is from the future. Together they deduce that Lucy has been sent back to 1999 to re-do a kiss with Matt that cause things to get weird between them and completely cut each other off." Concluding, "STREAM IT! This film draws most of its humor from the many 1990s references and gags throughout, but ultimately it shines as a warm, time-travel-tinged take on a redemption story where our leading lady realizes that she can have it all, if she just opens her heart a little."

Hallmark Brings a Gift and Coal

On November 21, 2024 and November 23, 2024, Hallmark Channel premiered two movies that received polar opposite reactions from critics, 'A Novel Noel' and Three Wiser Men and a Boy'. Having personally watched both, I agreed with the critics on both, even though 'A Novel Noel' had the stronger performances in my opinion.

Credit: @2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Allister Foster
In 'A Novel Noel', "A NYC book editor takes on a temporary gig running a Maine bookstore. Battling with the owners' son, she rediscovers her passion for nurturing creativity." The ensemble cast includes Brendan Penny and Julie Gonzalo. Maddy Casale of Decider writes, "Julie Gonzalo gives a committed and emotionally open performance as Harper. She’s got an easy charm as Harper that makes you root for her." Adding, "As charming and cute as I find any independent bookstore, including The Book Cabinet, that same charm doesn’t seem to extend to the rest of A Novel Noel. While Julie Gonzalo does her best to carry the film, Harper’s romance with Sawyer doesn’t make for the most riveting or romantic viewing. I’m sorry, but she gives him so much more than he ever gives her. I mean, for Christmas, she got his manuscript PUBLISHED, while all he got her was… an impersonal necklace from the same market he goes to every year. Look, I know that many of us enjoy a good enemies or rivals-to-lovers story (myself included!) but having characters argue and disagree doesn’t automatically equate to romantic tension. In fact, many of those exchanges just made Sawyer come off as a bit of a snob or immature compared to Harper. You’re too good for him, girl! And when he continually teasingly calls you “city girl,” it isn’t as cute as he thinks it is! A Novel Noel also has a bit of an issue with showing versus telling, doing so much more of the latter that it can be hard to fully buy into some of what the movie is selling. For example, we’re told that Sawyer is this gifted writer, but never hear any of his actual work. We just get a brief shot of him clickity-clacking away on a laptop with a focused look on his face and have to assume he’s penning the next great American novel. I’m sure you did, Sawyer, I’m sure you did."

Credit: @2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Ricardo Hubbs
In 'Three Wiser Men and a Boy', "The Brenner brothers are back and putting on a holiday pageant for young Thomas, while trying to cope with life's curveballs, including their mom's new boyfriend." The ensemble cast includes Andrew W. Walker, Paul Campbell, and Tyler Hynes. Fortunately, this film received rave reviews from critics, much like the first film in the series that united the three Hallmark fan favorites in one film for the first time. Movieguide writes, "THREE WISER MEN AND A BOY is a hilarious Christmas comedy on the Hallmark Channel. A sequel to THREE WISER MEN AND A BABY, the movie follows three brothers, Luke, Stephan and Taylor. They work to help Luke’s son put on a school Christmas play. Complicating matters is their mother’s new boyfriend, Roy, a pastor. The brothers aren’t taking it well. They resent Roy for invading their family’s Christmas traditions. Producing the Christmas play develops some big problems. A small school fire endangers the whole production. Can the brothers save the play and figure out how to coexist with their mom’s boyfriend in time for Christmas? THREE WISER MEN AND A BOY has high production values. The script is funny and heartfelt. The three lead actors give wonderful comedic performances. THREE WISER MEN AND A BOY has a strong moral worldview with positive references to Christmas. It stresses kindness, strong relationships with family and friends, and forgiveness. THREE WISER MEN AND A BOY has no violence, foul language or crude content. So, it’s suitable for nearly all ages." Adding, "The three lead actors, Andrew W. Walker, Tyler Hynes and Paul Campbell, deliver perfect comical performances. The movie’s humor is balanced with its emotional message of appreciating family, new and old, showing kindness, and forgiving other people."

'Confessions of a Christmas Letter' Reviews: "The onesies might have stuck with me more than anything else in Confessions of a Christmas Letter, to be honest, and that’s probably not what the main takeaway should ultimately be"

On November 17, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Confessions of a Christmas Letter', which has earneda mixed reception reviews from critics. In the film, "After years of losing her community's Christmas letter competition, Settie Rose hires Juan, a struggling novelist, to depict her dysfunctional family in the best possible light." The ensemble cast includes Angela Kinsey, Colleen Wheeler, Alec Santos, Andy Thompson, and Lillian Doucet-Roche. But what did the critics say?

Photo by Clem Onojeghuo on Unsplash
Maddy Casale of Decider writes, "Hallmark continues to hit viewers with nostalgic stars we know and love by getting The Office‘s Angela Kinsey to lead Confessions of a Christmas Letter. This romantic dramedy manages to reunite Kinsey with her former The Office co-star, Brian Baumgartner, AKA Kevin Malone, as she plays another Angela Martin-like Type A, competitive woman who’s determined to go to extremes to get what she wants. In addition to Kinsey, Alec Santos and Lillian Doucet-Roche act as romantic leads who just might find their happy ending with one another, despite seeming like total opposites on paper." Adding, "The romance between Juan and Lily has its own issues, as in the movie’s efforts to hammer home that the two are total opposites, they end up appearing somewhat unsuited for one another. I fear that some of Juan’s affection towards Lily and the Roses might just be a product of Stockholm Syndrome by the end of his stay there (that is if they even let him leave). Once you’ve forced a guy to do silent disco on your front lawn and terribly tango in public, it seems like his will is pretty much broken. And lastly, I hate to say it, but I think I could have gone without seeing so many scenes where adults are wearing onesies. I like a onesie as much as the next person (unless that person is a baby, now they really love onesies), but I swear they wore those things every day (and night?). Did they ever even wash them? The onesies might have stuck with me more than anything else in Confessions of a Christmas Letter, to be honest, and that’s probably not what the main takeaway should ultimately be."

'A Reason for the Season' Reviews: "Taylor Cole shines leading the way as Evie Lane, turning a character that could come across as bratty and unlikeable in the wrong hands into a warm, charming protagonist you root for"

In November, Hallmark Channel released 'A Reason for the Season', which has earned predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, "In order to earn her trust fund and with the help of a handsome local attorney, Evie is tasked with granting Christmas wishes to the people who saved her life on the night of her birth." The ensemble cast includes Kevin McGarry and Taylor Cole. But what did the critics say?

Maddy Casale of Decider notes, "A Reason for the Season shares some similarities with the 2017 Netflix Original comedy-drama film Christmas Inheritance, namely the fact that both titles revolve around a spoiled heiress from New York City confronting her privilege in a small town over Christmastime so she can earn her inheritance. And of course, she’s got a budding romance with a local guy, too! Taylor Cole shines leading the way as Evie Lane, turning a character that could come across as bratty and unlikeable in the wrong hands into a warm, charming protagonist you root for. Cole also has a great natural chemistry with her co-stars, making every onscreen interaction entertaining and engaging." Adding, "A major staple of many Hallmark holiday movies is something that’s supposed to come across as a charming fictional small town, but A Reason for the Season actually delivers when it comes to Brookswood and its lovable inhabitants. Every single townsperson from the Polaroid photo was a delight and I genuinely enjoyed spending time with them and seeing their little side stories. I couldn’t help but root for their happiness and feel touched at the completion of their respective Christmas wishes. Even Evie’s baffled acknowledgment that everyone is so happy in this town felt like a winning tongue-in-cheek way of saying “Yes, we know we’re in a Hallmark movie and we’re going to have fun with it.” But while all of the side characters make a positive impact, Evie, Elizabeth, and Kyle especially pop as the film’s leads. Taylor Cole’s easy chemistry with Sarah-Jane Redmond and Kevin McGarry makes both the familial and romantic moments ring that much truer and pleasant to watch. There’s nothing particularly shocking or ground-breaking about the characters or the plot, but there doesn’t have to be. It’s just pure Christmastime escapism and easy viewing. And I think we can all raise a cup of cheer to that!" Photo by Mourad Saadi on Unsplash

'Jingle Bell Run' Reviews: "In this case, a holiday reality TV racing competition that takes place in real time right before Christmas is definitely something I’d watch"

On November 16, 2024, Hallmark Channel released 'Jingle Bell Run', which has received rave reviews from critics. In the film, "Self-described bookworm Avery is paired with retired hockey star Wes to compete in a holiday race across America. The team struggles through themed challenges until romance runs its course." The ensemble cast includes Andrew W. Walker, Ashley Williams, Jinjara Mitchell, and Michelle Brezinski. But what did the critics say?

Credit: @2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Allister Foster
Liz Kocan of Decider says, "Obviously they hate each other… at first. But then, as they travel by map all over the country, solving puzzles and racing to their next challenge, they begin to grow on each other. She’s the brains, he’s the brawn, and over time, they begin to share more of themselves with each other and form a bond. But when a producer asks Wes – behind Avery’s back – to play up a romance angle to hook more viewers in to the show, he obliges because, let’s not forget why he got into this, for the eyeballs." Adding, "Jingle Bell Run cleverly combines the reality TV show confessional with a rom-com, so we’re not only watching a movie version of events, but the reality show version, too. The show also introduces us to a few of the other competing couples, including an older woman named Shirley and her partner Katie, and Ramon and Brad, who were all strangers when they joined the show, but who have developed close relationships with each other with every passing challenge. By the end, it almost seems unnecessary for Avery and Wes to win, because the movie has us rooting for everyone. (Avery and Wes do win though, but ultimately they give some of their winnings to each of their competitors because that’s just the vibe they’re giving out.) While I don’t necessarily need a competitive aspect to my holiday films, there’s something really fun when movies like this introduce a concept that I wish existed in real life. In this case, a holiday reality TV racing competition that takes place in real time right before Christmas is definitely something I’d watch. (Similarly, in the recently released ‘Twas the Date Before Christmas, that movie prominently features a Christmas Day “Family Christmas Olympics,” which sounds incredible… if anyone in my family had the time or energy to execute such a thing.) That a reality TV competition is the construct around which the whole premise is based is a really fun way to bring a group of characters together and help each other find the true meaning of Christmas and all that good stuff."

Hallmark Releases Two Instant Classics

On November 9, 2024 and November 10, 2024, Hallmark Channel released two films that seem destined to become classics for the holiday based network, 'Santa Tell Me' and 'Tis the Season to Be Irish', which have received rave reviews from critics.

Credit: ©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Ricardo Hubbs
In 'Santa Tell Me', "A design show host finds a letter from Santa promising to meet her true love, a man named Nick, by Christmas Eve. Meeting three Nicks complicates her search." The ensemble cast includes Daniel Lissing, Erin Krawkow, Benjamin Ayres, and Christopher Russell. Maddy Casale of Decider notes, "Our Call: STREAM IT! Embrace some seasonal silliness with the easy viewing and simple charms of Santa Tell Me. Because sometimes Santa Claus has nothing better to do than play matchmaker for one specific lady and you know what? That’s okay!" Adding, "When you accept that Santa Tell Me takes place in a some alternate reality where magical letters from Santa write themselves out of thin air (to much less shock and fanfare than I would have expected) and horse drawn carriages appear in your driveway exactly when you need them, you can have a really fun time with this movie. There may not be much logic or realism to this, but it’s a Hallmark Christmas movie, okay, it doesn’t always have to be that deep! Olivia is a winning leading lady (it’s also fun that she ends up being a bit of a player as she tries to sift through the Nicks to find The Nick To Rule Them All) and the guys end of being entertaining caricatures of leading men. The three Nicks are especially hilarious himbos once they all meet and interact with one another, making for some laughs and a dynamic that I certainly would want to keep watching. Admittedly Darcy at times just seems to serve as a vehicle to help push Olivia’s story forward, but even she has her pops of personality and hidden inner depths (like that little moment towards the end of the movie between her and a surprise arrival at the sisters’ door). Olivia and Chris have a nice build up to their own romantic connection and everyone in this movie seems to understand the assignment and commit to the roles they’re playing from top to bottom."

In 'Tis the Season to Be Irish', "Rose tries to flip a house in Ireland but is blocked by Sean, a handsome local who wants to preserve the historic cottage." The ensemble cast includes Fiona Gubelmann, Rowan Finken, Sophia Adli, Ali Hardiman, Rosemary Henderson, and Natalie Britton. Liz Kocan of Decider says, "Think of ‘Tis The Season To Be Irish as what would happen if Nancy Meyers’ The Holiday was not about a house swap but was only told from Cameron Diaz’s point of view as she visits rural England at Christmas. (And swap England for Ireland, of course.) There’s also the running gag with the rogue sheep that wanders around town that may or may not be a nod to Jenny the donkey from The Banshees of Inisherin. Probably not, but is a livestock cameo required for every movie set in Ireland? They tell you to dress for the job you want, but I have no idea what a person who makes up Hallmark movie titles wears. ‘Tis The Season To Be Irish?? What a name! It tells you everything you need to know about the movie (Ireland at Christmas) and lets you fill in the blanks everywhere else. If you hear me, Hallmark, you know where to find me and I’m open for title brainstorming work. (Looking forward to the sequel, Dingle All The Way, and the unrelated but also set-in-Ireland movie Four-Leaf Lover.) For serious though, this movie. Fiona Gubelmann and Eoin Macken are the reason this movie works; their characters are both “old,” as in, in their 30s, one assumes, but their life experience is what exposes their vulnerabilities. As Sean, Macken spends a lot of the movie drily poking fun of Rose, but his sarcasm is a mask to cover up the hurt he’s experienced after previous heartbreak. Rose, feeling abandoned by her father (and lonely after the death of her mother) uses her nomadic lifestyle as an excuse to not get close to others. Both characters are a little lost and lonely thanks to their parental issues, and romantically, they’re both slightly damaged goods, but the film never lets things get to dark and tortured. Instead, they realize that instead of fighting their feelings, love is a risk worth taking now that they’ve found one another."

'Trivia at St. Nick's' Reviews: Skip This Trivia Night Based Film

On November 8, 2024, Hallmark Channel premiered 'Trivia at St. Nick's', which has earned predominantly negative reviews from critics. In the film, "Locals compete in a Christmas bar trivia tournament at the end of the semester." The ensemble cast includes Brant Daugherty, Brian McCarthy, Tammin Sursok, and Devin McCarthy. But what did the critics say?

Credit: ©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Michael Larson
Maddy Casale of Decider writes, "The whole “Type A woman meets laid-back joke-cracking guy only to initially dislike one another, then become friends and maybe even something more” feels like an attempt at speed-running a version of When Harry Met Sally that just takes place over one trivia-filled Christmas. I loved Willie C. Carpenter’s winning whimsy and easy charm as Gary. Even as a supporting character, he popped and was a consistently likable and positive presence in any scene that he was in." Adding, "Trivia At St. Nick’s is, unfortunately, not as charming and engaging as its initial premise sets it up to be. The trivia angle is fun and somewhat original compared to some other Hallmark movies out there, but the film’s largely two-dimensional characters and cheesy writing ended up making the final product feel a bit bland and boring. Both Celeste and Max feel like caricatures, but Celeste is especially frustrating. I mean, it’s truly ironic that she teaches astronomy because she’s often a walking black hole sucking all fun and good feelings out of the room with her uptight and judgmental personality. And Max in comparison comes across as this perfect himbo who is too good to be true, with constant childlike wonder that eventually starts to become slightly grating. Their romance is neither exciting nor particularly believable in the given timeframe, making this whole thing a bit of a tough sell."

Movies that Deserved Better: 'A Biltomore Christmas' (2023)

In 2023, Hallmark Channel released 'A Biltmore Christmas', which became a classic for the network but deserved a bigger reception due to the big screen quality of the proceedings. In the film, "A magical hourglass sends modern-day screenwriter Lucy Hardgrove to the set of the 1947 holiday movie classic "His Merry Wife!" However, before she can return to the present, Lucy must make things right or threaten to alter the future forever." The ensemble cast includes Kristoffer Polaha and Bethany Joy Lenz. It can currently be seen on Hallmark Channel, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Apple TV+. But what did the critics say?

Kristen Maldonado of Pop Culture Planet says, "A Biltmore Christmas! seamlessly weaves the glamour of old Hollywood into the world of Hallmark. The Biltmore Estate is a stunning backdrop, while the time travel aspect gives this film a wonderful balance of freshness and nostalgia." Adding, "While the end is a bit abrupt, this is definitely a stand out of the Hallmark holiday slate. I’d love to see a version of their black and white classic His Merry Wife! next!"

Photo by Toni Cuenca on Unsplash
Maddy Casale of Decider praises the film, stating, "A Biltmore Christmas is a lot of fun! The movie felt like it flew by as we witnessed the many mishaps and entertaining moments that were a product of Lucy’s time traveling. Between the story, characters, and backdrop of the actual gorgeous Biltmore Estate, itself, this was a very unique kind of Hallmark movie that felt both nostalgic and current, and definitely seemed to be imbued with plenty of Christmas magic. The comedic moments hit throughout the film, but the romance between Lucy and Jack especially shines, as their different home times and backgrounds also kept me guessing and feeling invested over what the outcome of their relationship would be (and if you want to find out for yourself, you’re just going to have to watch the movie). The holiday season is often one where we feel the pull of the past while also making space for the new, and A Biltmore Christmas really seemed to understand all of this as it paid homage to old Hollywood and the famed Biltmore Estate while also delivering a clever and endearing finished product that feels very much of our present moment. There’s no shortage of holiday magic, self-aware cheesiness, and much merriness in A Biltmore Christmas, which makes it a pretty darn successful season movie in our book."

'Holiday Mismatch' is Perfect for 90s TV Fans

On November 3, 2024, Hallmark Channel premiered 'Holiday Mismatch', which also acted as a reunion of the iconic Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda from 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' (Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea). In the film, "New retiree Barb joins a Holiday Committee but clashes with long standing member Kath. When they realize their kids have started dating, they conspire to break up the happy couple." But what did the critics say?

Film Gate Reviews notes, "Holiday Mismatch should be at the top of any Hallmark Christmas rotation. The characters are very simplistic but it’s a really nice romance with the right amount of comedy sprinkled in. It also employs two of the better rom-com tropes: fake dating turning into real dating; and meddling families who are constantly trying to get them together and then break them up and using reverse psychology and reverse-reverse psychology and then rinse and repeat." Adding, "The movie works because the romance works. Actors Jon McLaren and Maxine Denis have good chemistry together, the characters match well, and it is so easy to root for them as a couple. Even though it’s obvious where the ending is headed, you want to watch them get there and it is nicely helped along by all of the comedy along the way. It’s a simple concept but Holiday Mismatch is an enjoyable watch."

©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Philippe Bosse
Rebekah's Readings and Watchings says, "Of course everything gets messed up. The two mothers end up at loggerheads again, the young couple deciding not to see each other for real or fake, and both mothers end up in their children’s black books for interfering in their lives. Of course happy endings abound professionally and personally for the two young lovers and the two mothers, proving once and for all (NOT!) that opposites really do attract. This movie is a hoot from beginning to end, and I never ever even saw one episode of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. To my fellow ignoramuses, Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea used to star in the old Melissa Joan Hart vehicle together as sister witches, and there were many easter eggs and homages to the sitcom embedded in the script (apparently.) Sorry, I can’t leave this review without pointing out that the actor who played Shane, Jon McLaren, looks exactly like the actor Patrick Wilson."

Two Fan Favorites Bring Joy to Hallmark Channel

©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Eric Zachanowich
On November 1, 2024, Hallmark Channel premiered 'A Carol for Two', which quickly became popular amongst the diehard Hallmark fans. In the film, "New to New York, talented singer Violette takes a job as a singing waitress. Things get complicated when her duet partner sets her up with a friend but starts developing feelings himself." The ensemble cast includes Ginna Claire Mason, Jordan Litz, Charlotte d'Amboise, and Stephanie Sy. But what did the critics say?

Liz Kocan of Decider says, "A Carol For Two is essentially part Christmas revue, filled with carols and hymns and original songs, part romance, with an off-Broadway backdrop. While many Christmas-y movies look the part, with their beautifully decorated sets and twinkly cityscapes, this one also sounds the part, placing beloved Christmas music (and loads of musical theater references) throughout to add to the festive appeal. The movie is at its worst when Brad, grieving his past relationship to a shallow girlfriend named Chanel, tries to win over Violette just because… he can? He makes no effort to get to know her or treat her well, he simply wants to win her over to feel less lonely, which is, I suppose, the point; his blustery personality is in stark contrast to Alex’s reserved, serious demeanor, but secretly, Alex is the one observing Violette and really seeing her for the woman she is. Despite the obvious, deceptive plotting, the film never gets too bogged down by that, and the talented cast and musical performances ultimately make it shine." Adding, "Our Call: You don’t have to be a theater nerd to love A Carol For Two (it wouldn’t hurt though), but if you love Christmas for the music and the hopeful shot of happiness it tends to bring, this one’s for you. STREAM IT!"

On October 31, 2024, Hallmark Channel also premiered 'My Sweet Austrian Holiday', which also left viewers and critics wanting more. In the the film, "Charlotte recently moved to Vienna and became a chocolatier after inheriting her grandparents' chocolate shop. Henry has just taken over his father's company that is trying to take over Charlotte's shop." The ensemble cast includes Will Kemp and Brittany Bristow. Liz Kocan also reviewed the film, stating, "My Sweet Austrian Holiday brings together the best of Christmas: gorgeous B-roll of Vienna at the holidays, tons of food porn, truly likeable characters, and feel-good optimism. STREAM IT!" Adding, "Henry was never meant to be a greedy monster (that honor goes to Morgana), instead, he represents what we wish corporate bros would behave like. Men who aren’t only beholden to the almighty dollar, but who want to use their power for good. It’s heartwarming because it feels so fictional, you know? But if living in this cinematic world full of fancy chocolates and people who do the right thing is fiction, it’s hard to want to live in the real world where billionaires only want to conquer space while their 20-something girlfriends breed a small army for them. I think I’m getting off track. My point is that My Sweet Austrian Holiday is a truly appealing film on several levels; the characters themselves are all layered and interesting, and Will Kemp and Brittany Bristow are well-matched with a warmth that’s hard to resist. Also, CHOCOLATE. So much melted, drizzling chocolate everywhere, Augustus Gloop would not know how to behave. But the film wants us to hope that everyone will will live happily ever after because they all do the right thing and look out for one another. The fictional Hallmark billionaire who looks out for the little guy is a common trope this holiday season, we’ve run across him in a couple of films now, and I can only assume it’s something the good people at Hallmark are manifesting for us all."

'Five Gold Rings' Reviews: "Holland Roden and Nolan Gerard Funk have nice, comfortable chemistry as romantic leads"

Credit: ©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Heather Beckstead
On November 7, 2024, Hallmark Channel premiered 'Five Gold Rings', which has earned predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, which stars Nolan Gerard Funk and Holland Roden, "An artist returns home for the holidays and gets tasked with a Christmas quest left by her grandmother. She and the local PI must return lost items to their owners before Christmas." But what did the critics say?

Credit: ©2024 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Heather Beckstead
Maddy Casale of Decider writes, "More than a movie, Five Gold Rings actually reminds me of Gilmore Girls. Led by three generations of women, the Miller family has single mom Kay raising bright, only daughter Audrey in a cozy small town, where they live in a surprisingly large home considering Kay runs a small family business. Audrey goes from struggling at chasing her dreams in a big city to return to her charming hometown to start over and maybe even find love with a guy from her past, while Kay falls for a local blue-collar guy who has always pined for her. If that’s not the Hallmark version of Lorelei and Rory Gilmore I don’t know what is!" Adding, "Five Gold Rings may be cheesy and extremely earnest in the way that Hallmark movies tend to be, but its mystery aspect keeps things from feeling completely predictable. Sure we still know how it’s all going to end, but the moments of discovery with the five gold rings and their little stories carried enough originality and surprises to keep things feeling relatively fun and fresh. Additionally, the whole plot device of needing to find the owners of each ring also cleverly separated the movie into a natural five act structure that felt well-paced and focused from beginning to end. Holland Roden and Nolan Gerard Funk have nice, comfortable chemistry as romantic leads, and their blossoming connecting was overall pleasant to watch, even if they were obviously down bad for each other for the start (especially Funk’s Finn, wow, what a flirt). It feels like, though, the heart of this movie is familial love and connection, and we feel that through Molly’s intricately planned quest for Audrey, and Audrey’s sweet, close relationship with her mom. So even though there are, of course, absurd or goofy things, like people in the Midwest being lightly dressed for winter, an over-the-top snooty rival antique store owner, or adults making a snowman with a random teen because one of them has never made a snowman before (he grew up in Minnesota, how is that possible), the good outweighs the bad and leaves a positive impression in the end."

Hallmark Gifts Two Holiday Treats

On October 26, 2024 and October 27, 2024 respectively, Hallmark Channel gifted viewers with two holiday themed films that quickly won over viewers, 'The Christmas Charade' and 'The 5-Year Christmas Party'. But what did the critics say?

Photo Courtesy of Hallmark Media and Borja Moncunill
In 'The 5-Year Christmas Party', which is "Told over the course of five years, two recent college grads find themselves drawn together year after year while working for a catering company that specializes in holiday parties." The ensemble cast includes Jordan Fisher and Katie Findlay. Mandi Bierly of TV Line says, "Anyone who loves the 2012 Danica McKellar-Dustin Milligan Lifetime classic Love at the Christmas Table might have a soft spot for our runner-up pick, The 5-Year Christmas Party (premieres Sunday, Oct. 27 at 8 pm on Hallmark Channel). It’s another heartfelt story about two friends taking years to become something more. Only this time, theater school crushes Alice (Katie Findlay) and Max (Jordan Fisher) acknowledge their feelings from the start, then choose not to date because he’s leaving for L.A. to pursue screen acting and she’s staying in Chicago to one day direct theater. Christmas season after Christmas season, jobs at his sister’s catering company bring them back together long enough to reconnect and grow closer before one of them pulls away again. Findlay and Fisher are a winning duo, equally comfortable in the banter-filled moments and in the quieter ones where twinkling or teary eyes do some of the talking."

Photo Courtesy of Hallmark Media and Vortex Media
In 'The Christmas Charade', "Facing another dull Christmas alone, sparks fly when a risk-averse librarian accidentally gets wrapped up with a grinchy FBI agent in an undercover mission to save the Heart of Christmas." The ensemble cast includes Corey Sevier (who also directs) and Rachel Skarsten. TV Line writes, "We may never get to watch anyone but baker Hannah Swensen solve a murder during the holidays. So we’ll just have to settle for an elementary school librarian helping to thwart a jewelry heist at the Mistletoe Ball. Rachel Skarsten stars as Whitney, who was raised by two home security experts to believe adventure is best enjoyed in books and movies. Wanting to shake things up a bit, she agrees to a blind date — and accidentally sits down with undercover FBI agent Josh (Corey Sevier, also the director), who assumes she’s the new colleague posing as his girlfriend for a lunch date with the suspected thief and his wife. Once Whitney inadvertently talks her way into helping the wife plan the ball, where a $10 million necklace will be the centerpiece, there’s no turning back. The script (by Kate Pragnell, also Sevier’s wife) hits all the fun notes you’d anticipate. A training montage reveals Whitney has more skills than Josh thinks. Curmudgeon/lone wolf Josh gets roped into playing Whitney’s boyfriend for a holiday game night with her parents. They perform a tango to “Por Una Cabeza,” which you’ll recognize from Scent of a Woman, and a stunt that defies gravity. The best part: You won’t see the end twist coming. Should Sevier and Skarsten, co-stars in Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Mystery earlier this year as well, want to partner for another sting, we’re in."

'Scouting for Christmas' Divides Critics

On October 20, 2024, Hallmark Channel premiered 'Scouting for Christmas', which has received a mixed reception from critics. In the film, "A single mom tries to make her daughter's Christmas special since her dad is working overseas for the holidays. She partners with her daughter's favorite baker for the Holiday Ball." The ensemble cast includes Tamera Mowry-Housley and Carlo Marks. Read the full review round-up below.

Photo Courtesy of Hallmark Media and David Strongman
Liz Kocan of Decider says, Scouting for Christmas does for feminism and women’s unity what Katy Perry thought she was doing for the same cause when she released her video for “Woman’s World” this summer. Okay, that’s harsh, nothing set the women’s movement back more than that video. My point is that Scouting for Christmas spends an inordinate amount of time pitting Angela, a working, busy, single mom, against Den Mother Elizabeth, a stay at home mother who openly pities Angela, fears for Brooklyn’s development, and sneers at anything that’s not rooted in “traditional family values.” The movie might think that it’s winking at these warring women and the values they represent, but it’s just an odd feud that feels manufactured and outdated. And then there’s the romance between William and Angela. While these two characters are portrayed as lovely people and there’s absolutely nothing to dislike about them, there’s just no real chemistry between the actors. Their characters are both so apprehensive and cautious about taking the next step in the relationship that they – and we – really don’t get to know who they are, other than the fact that they’ve both been unlucky in love, dedicated to their work, and really love little Brooklyn." Adding, "While Scouting for Christmas certainly has most of the obvious charms of a Hallmark Christmas movie, the festive holiday backdrop, the likable characters, the boundless hope and optimism of single-parented children, it falls into the unfortunate category as one of the more generic, forgettable entries in the genre."

TV Line's Mani Bierly notes, "The child matchmaker trope is alive and well. Sunny Scout Brooklyn (Audrey Wise Alvarez) would like her consciously uncoupled mother, busy realtor Angela (Tamera Mowry-Housley), to date again. So, she suggests Angela and sweet baker William (Carlo Marks) partner to pitch him as the caterer for the Sunny Scouts’ holiday ball. Cue cozy meet-ups for menu inspiration and things getting interesting when Angela’s globetrotting archaeologist ex makes it home for the holidays after all."

'Night Call' Reviews: Film "stands with better efforts due to its relentless high stakes and a believable and sympathetic performance from its lead"

On January 17, 2025, with a streaming release on January 24th, Magnet Releasing  released 'Night Call', which has earned predom...
