THN's Kat Hughes notes, "It’s another solid hit for Scottish director Graham Hughes. Though Hostile Dimensions might be more heavy on the sci-fi elements, there remain plenty of Hughes’ now trademark unexpected scares to give the heart a jolt or two." Adding, "Hughes has clearly had a lot of fun dreaming up a wealth of weird environments for Sam and Ash to explore. Some locations are merely a little strange, others eerie, with a few downright terrifying. A trip to a kid’s soft play centre called Pandemonium provides a traumatic time for the audience; prepare to never feel safe in soft play or in the presence of pandas again. Before that though, Hughes gets in a sneaky scare early doors (or should that be door?) with the surprise appearance of a nightmarish visage. The visual FX to achieve some of the otherworldly settings is brilliant. Hughes manages to mask the production’s tighter budget, helping it stand aside those with triple the money. It’s proof that you don’t need a ton of money, just a clever idea and those displayed here are ingenious."

Dolores Quintana of Nightmarish Conjurings praises the film, stating, "HOSTILE DIMENSIONS is an original found footage gem that glories in the horror of suggestion and existential crisis with humor and the sensitive gutsiness of its leads, who give wonderfully amusing and sympathetic performances." Adding, "The humor and the sensible goodness of (most) of the characters are refreshing, and the found footage aspect of the film isn’t as “shaky cam” as most other found footage movies, so that’s another plus for people who prefer that. The film is low-budget but still looks really good because the locations, performances, and cinematography are ace."

Jennie Kermode of Eye for Film says, "Though it might seem to be all over the place – structurally as well as thematically – there’s a tight control underlying Hostile Dimensions which pretty much holds it together and delivers a satisfying story. Hughes may not have budget to make it a full on visual spectacular but he nevertheless delivers some magical moments, whilst his skills as an editor come to the fore in a marvellously inventive chase scene towards the end. The performances are of variable quality but by and large they’re strong enough to make it work. The two leads have a freshness about them which adds to the film’s energy. This helps to carry it through patches of uneven pacing, and makes the characters likeable even though we don’t get to know them in any depth. There are some smart ideas hidden in the bizarre subplots and sparky, naturalistic dialogue. The darker turn which the film takes towards the end is carefully set up, but not everyone will see it coming. Though it plays with chaos, this is a solid piece of filmmaking which will leave you eager to see what Hughes will come up with next."

Joel Harley of Starburst writes, "With everyone from Spider-Man to Rick & Morty getting in on the Multiverse, the concept is already pretty old hat, but this cheerily low-key sci-fi proves that it shouldn’t be relegated entirely to superheroes and snarky cartoons."
